Founder/Partner in BreakAway Rides
Things have to move for Katja, ideally fast. With a knack for ultra-endurance racing, she completed the Tour D’Afrique, an eyepopping 12 000-kilometer race from Cairo to Cape Town in 2016. She loves the unforeseen, new experiences and connecting with people from all walks of life. Another quality is her ability to juggle about 1 million things at the same time without dropping the ball and breaking a sweat. Before venturing into mountain biking, she was working for many years as a market research manager for a global research business.
Hungry for an adventure she came to South Africa in 2006, got her hands on a second-hand mountain bike and explored the Cape. It was probably on one of those rides that she fell in love with Cape Town and began contemplating to stay longer. Eleven years down the line, she is still riding the mountains of the Cape and is now married to a local. You find more info about Katja here: www.katjasteenkamp.com

Kate is the living proof that women can achieve anything in live with focus and determination. She gets up at the crack of dawn, and we talk a painful 4am, to whip her clients into shape each morning in her profession as a personal trainer. She is always on the run rushing from one responsibility to the next but above all she is passionate about it. Whether it’s coaching kids to ride bikes, getting her clients through the ABSA Cape Epic or shaping up those abs to look your best. She will give it her 100%. She is a mom, a wife, a successful athlete, coach and above all a business woman who has set out to help people live a fit and healthy life. Hannele doesn’t need much introduction. She has been at home on most top podium steps be found in South Africa, and even with a somewhat riper age she proofs it doesn’t have to be a hindrance to remain on the step with the best view. She has a beautiful mind and believes that through love, faith, hope, integrity and passion nothing in life will ever be too tough. Maybe less known amongst her fans, she is extremely ADHD, an absolute nerd and a hermit in disguise. She began preparing her own health mueslis and snacks back in the days as a professional athlete. 15 years later she is selling her products under the ‘Passion 4 Wholeness’ label in major grocery stores around the country. This extraordinary woman joined forces with BreakAway Rides in 2017. Her focus will be on the development of female and youth cycling. Visit her website: www.passion4wholeness.co.za

Caren spends most of the year cycling along the Garden Route and around South Africa guiding riders from all around the world through the spectacular countryside. She has participated in most South African mountain bike events and has completed several Absa Cape Epics. Self-navigated adventure racing is one of her passions and she recently completed the Freedom Challenge, a fully self-supported mountain bike race across South Africa.
Her yearning for the outdoors has redirected Caren from previous office-bound roles in Germany as an attorney and in the property industry. In 2000 Caren moved to Cape Town on a two-year job assignment to establish the South African operations for an international property company. In the process, she anchored not only the business but herself and happily exchanged Hamburg for Cape Town as home. When off the bike, this adventurous woman takes care of her two daughters, or can be found appreciating good food, sipping fine wine or making excellent coffee.
Caren has been working in tourism since 2012 and joined BreakAway Rides in 2017. She is heading up our Tours.
Amy is a self confessed health nut who loves spending time in the kitchen almost as much as being on her mountain bike. Being a runner before, she was easily persuaded to trade trainers for wheels after meeting her boyfriend (A professional Mountain biker himself) and being introduced to the sublime local trails. A passion developed quickly and Amy now loves nothing more than exploring all the natural beauty this country has to offer atop her trusty black steed. Especially fond of a steep technical climb, she also enjoys the challenge of a rocky, treacherous descent every now and then, and finds the constant progression in this field truly incredible and somewhat addictive. She also has vast and fond experience with children of all ages and is really enjoying sharing the love of Mountain biking with the next generation of Trail Blazers.
Robert Du Preez
Meet our newest addition to the team, Robert Du Preez. He is a very talented road cyclist and represented South Africa at Junior World track champs 2008. He’s equally as passionate about mountain biking and as a knack for technical and fast flowing trails. Robert is an experienced sports coach and works with various pre-primary and primary schools around Cape Town. He has a wonderful way to connect with children and brings tons of fun and energy to our junior program. You can connect with him on Instagram – @robdpreez, or Facebook – @RobertDuPreez
Kylie found her passion for mountain biking on her way to breakfast when she decided to take her dad’s bike on a little detour through some of the ‘drop offs’ of the downhill section in Tokai forest. She emerged with a puncture, a few scratches and an adrenaline induced smile she couldn’t shake. Soon she started racing downhill and local Enduro events. She has a knack for technical riding and loves the freedom mountain biking in the Cape offers. Learning new skills and pushing boundaries is what drives her passion to ride. Having ridden most of the Cape trails she can’t wait to show you her favourite spots, just be sure to bring sufficient suspension travel for the odd 1 meter drop that she might throw in. When not riding she loves a good read and a great glass of wine.
Guide & Paramedic
Broken arms, shoulder dislocations, fractured elbows, or bruised ribs are amongst the things on Marianne’s daily ‘To do’ list. When our qualified paramedic is not speeding to an emergency (and smiling for the traffic cameras along the way), she is riding the majestic mountains of the Cape. She started out as a biathlete in Norway but soon realised that adrenaline levels are best maintained through mountain biking so she begun to explore the mountains of Norway and later on in her adopted home, South Africa, with her beloved Merida. She recently took up Helicopter lessons for her ‘day job’ but secretly admits that it’s to scout new trails. Join us for a mountain tour of the Cape with our very own restless Viking.
Clive’s vast riding experience is as long as his impressive list of podium finishes. It is no exaggeration to say that he has ridden through most of South Africa and knows the Cape trails backwards. He’s also often the first to know of new trails. More than anything though, Clive enjoys sharing his knowledge with novice riders. In his youth he and his friends would race each other on homemade off-road tracks – long before the BMX came to be! He bought his first MTB in 1992, and has been riding ever since. Over the years he’s won numerous provincial and national XCO and DH races, and has been crowned SA National Champ DH Masters and SA Cup Series Champ DH Masters. He also competed in the Pietermaritzburg DH World Cup in 2013 and finished an impressive 5th out of 10 participants in the Masters category. Another discipline Clive is very fond of is multi-day stage races and recently completed the 9 day race Joberg2c. He is also an avid golfer and pool shark. As with all sporting legends his story is best heard in person but if you need to break the ice, ask him about the story of ‘the King of Tokai’.
