Founder/Partner in BreakAway Rides
Things have to move for Katja, ideally fast. With a knack for ultra-endurance racing, she completed the Tour D’Afrique, an eyepopping 12 000-kilometer race from Cairo to Cape Town in 2016. She loves the unforeseen, new experiences and connecting with people from all walks of life. Another quality is her ability to juggle about 1 million things at the same time without dropping the ball and breaking a sweat. Before venturing into mountain biking, she was working for many years as a market research manager for a global research business.
Hungry for an adventure she came to South Africa in 2006, got her hands on a second-hand mountain bike and explored the Cape. It was probably on one of those rides that she fell in love with Cape Town and began contemplating to stay longer. Eleven years down the line, she is still riding the mountains of the Cape and is now married to a local. You find more info about Katja here: www.katjasteenkamp.com

Amy is a self confessed health nut who loves spending time in the kitchen almost as much as being on her mountain bike. Being a runner before, she was easily persuaded to trade trainers for wheels after meeting her boyfriend (A professional Mountain biker himself) and being introduced to the sublime local trails. A passion developed quickly and Amy now loves nothing more than exploring all the natural beauty this country has to offer atop her trusty black steed. Especially fond of a steep technical climb, she also enjoys the challenge of a rocky, treacherous descent every now and then, and finds the constant progression in this field truly incredible and somewhat addictive. She also has vast and fond experience with children of all ages and is really enjoying sharing the love of Mountain biking with the next generation of Trail Blazers.
Robert Du Preez
Meet our newest addition to the team, Robert Du Preez. He is a very talented road cyclist and represented South Africa at Junior World track champs 2008. He’s equally as passionate about mountain biking and as a knack for technical and fast flowing trails. Robert is an experienced sports coach and works with various pre-primary and primary schools around Cape Town. He has a wonderful way to connect with children and brings tons of fun and energy to our junior program. You can connect with him on Instagram – @robdpreez, or Facebook – @RobertDuPreez
Guide & Paramedic
Broken arms, shoulder dislocations, fractured elbows, or bruised ribs are amongst the things on Marianne’s daily ‘To do’ list. When our qualified paramedic is not speeding to an emergency (and smiling for the traffic cameras along the way), she is riding the majestic mountains of the Cape. She started out as a biathlete in Norway but soon realised that adrenaline levels are best maintained through mountain biking so she begun to explore the mountains of Norway and later on in her adopted home, South Africa, with her beloved Merida. She recently took up Helicopter lessons for her ‘day job’ but secretly admits that it’s to scout new trails. Join us for a mountain tour of the Cape with our very own restless Viking.
Nicole believes it’s all about extracting as much fun from life as possible, and there is no better place to learn about yourself and life than on your mountainbike! Her love for MTB began on the XCO cross country racing circuit over 15 years ago, gaining invaluable skills on the bike, and this experience has fueled her passion to coach and guide new riders to the sport. She understands first hand what is needed to balance physical training, mental strength and skills, as well as never forgetting the importance of smiling all the way! She loves an adventure and when she is not on her bike, Nicole is often out surfing or doing yoga. She believes the community and connection created through this beautiful sport are a vital part, and loves the friendships and memories she has gained through riding her bike! Continually amazed by the universal language of bikes, Nicole enjoys using client’s experiences on mountain bikes as a metaphor for internal growth! She has a keen awareness for getting people out of their comfort zones with confidence and helping riders build a solid foundation of MTB skills to help riders quickly realize and share in the love of singletrack! Seeing the sense of accomplishment and joy in riders as they conquer a new skill or challenging obstacle is the greatest reward!
