With so many schools opting to include mountain biking as a sport it seemed fitting to create an academy that specialised in mountain bike skills training for kids.
The first day was an absolute scorcher with the temperatures reaching a high of 30 degrees, which seemed fitting for the beginning of the school summer holidays.
With a fully booked workshop we were ready to start the day at the newly built Constantia Uitsig trail park, which is the perfect location for riders to hone and develop their skills over various man-made obstacles. The park is a mountain biking playground and has everything from berms, rock gardens, A-frames to tabletops and jumps both big and small. There are also a number of pump tracks that have been created to challenge everyone from beginner level up to advanced and pump tracks are a great way to build strength and get the body and muscles accustomed to moving over and around the jumps, berms and table tops with the least amount of pedaling possible.
Our Academy workshops are designed to teach kids the fundamentals of mountain biking so that they have a good foundation of skills and techniques that give them the confidence to progress and develop their technical abilities as safely as possible. Over the 3 days of riding the kids had the chance to get comfortable with the basics and then move on to more challenging obstacles and trails. Contantia Bike Park, Meerendal and Bloemendal are the 3 trails we used for the 3-day workshop and the variety of trails within the parks are the perfect training ground for kids to test out their newly acquired skills with many of the kids pushing their riding limits and getting out of their comfort zone which is where you learn the most. With the adrenaline pumping and smiles from ear to ear the high fives were going up all around us and the sense of satisfaction and achievement was contagious.
